Background of the Study
Student registration in universities is a critical process that involves the collection of various data points, including personal information, academic records, and biometric data. Traditional registration systems, while effective, are often cumbersome, prone to errors, and require substantial manual intervention (Ajayi & Oladipo, 2023). With the increasing demand for efficiency, universities are turning to AI-based image processing technologies to automate aspects of student registration, particularly biometric authentication, to improve accuracy and streamline the process (Khalid et al., 2024). AI-based image processing systems can use facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, and other biometric methods to authenticate and register students, offering enhanced security, faster processing times, and reduced administrative burden (Sulaimon et al., 2025).

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Bauchi State, represents an ideal case study for exploring the potential of AI-based image processing in student registration. The university faces challenges in managing its student registration system due to increasing enrollment numbers and the need for accurate, secure registration procedures (Muhammad et al., 2023). By integrating AI-based image processing tools, the university can significantly reduce the chances of identity fraud, enhance the efficiency of student registration, and create a more streamlined experience for both students and administrators.

Statement of the Problem
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, faces challenges in its student registration process, particularly with issues related to long wait times, manual data entry errors, and the potential for identity fraud during registration. The traditional system is labor-intensive and increasingly difficult to scale as student enrollment numbers grow. With the adoption of AI-based image processing systems, the university has the opportunity to automate biometric verification and streamline the registration process. However, the successful implementation of these systems requires addressing concerns such as system reliability, security, and user acceptance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement an AI-based image processing system for automated student registration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of the AI-based system in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of student registration.

  3. To evaluate students' and administrators' perceptions of the AI-based image processing system for student registration.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is the AI-based image processing system in improving the accuracy of student registration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi?

  2. What impact does the AI-based system have on the efficiency of the student registration process?

  3. How do students and administrators perceive the use of AI-based image processing for student registration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi?

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the use of AI-based image processing for automating student registration, with the potential to transform administrative processes at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. The findings could serve as a model for other Nigerian universities looking to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and security of their registration processes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the design and evaluation of AI-based image processing for student registration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, located in Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State. The study will be limited to the undergraduate registration process, with data collected from both students and university administrators.

Definitions of Terms

  1. AI-Based Image Processing: The use of artificial intelligence techniques, such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanning, to process and authenticate biometric data during student registration.

  2. Biometric Authentication: The process of verifying an individual's identity using unique biological traits, such as fingerprints, facial features, or iris scans.

  3. Student Registration: The administrative process through which students enroll in university courses and programs, involving the collection of personal, academic, and biometric data.
